NYPD Looks To Expand Airborne Devices For Surveillance
June 06, 2007

The NYPD is looking at some new counterterrorism equipment to give it a bird’s eye view of the city.

Speaking at an aerospace forum, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Wednesday that the department is looking to deploy a system of stationary airborne devices for use in surveillance and emergency operations.

The devices would link a number of software programs to provide the police department with up-to-the-minute video footage, weather data, and chemical detection alerts.

"The goal would be to combine them all on an airborne platform to be used in times of emergencies or civil unrest, something like the commercial blimp that we deployed during the Republican National Convention in 2004," said Kelly.

The NYPD's Aviation Unit currently monitors the airways using a fleet of high-tech helicopters outfitted with cameras and infrared sensors.

But Kelly says the stationary devices will be better equipped to deal with weather conditions, skyscrapers, and crowded airways.
